Loran Equipment Banner

Welcome to Loran-History.info
In memory of ETC Joe Jester

These pages remember the Coast Guardsmen, who served aboard Loran-A, Loran-C stations, and other Loran billets worldwide. These dedicated Coasties are but a few who provided radio navigation signals to millions of navigators. These pages wouldn't exist except through the efforts of MCPO Bill Dietz, USCG(ret). Bill has spent numerous hours for over a score of years collecting the information you find here.

If you wish to add your information to the database, just fill out the Contact us form. Bill or I will update the list.

We are looking for pictures and stories.  If you wish to contribute, please Contact Us. Look in your spam/junk mail for a reply.

 Joe (February 13, 1953 - November 15, 2020)

Update

20 AUG 2023: Status of the Loran History web site

Projects that are in the works:

1. CDR Gary Thomas (ret) and I are working toward publishing a Loran History book. This is an all-out effort on both parties with the understanding there are other priorities also.

2. I just returned from a six-week research trip to Boston and College Park archives. Now to sort and define the material for the web site and book.

3. Updating the web site is a chore in itself. A summary of what goes into this:
Standardize the format of the web page, review all records to ensure accuracy, search the NARA catalog, FOLD3, newspapers.com and the web itself for new information. While updating both the personnel roster and an internal matrix of the material. A web page can take anywhere from a day to a couple weeks pending the amount of material.

After an update and you get an error message from a stored bookmark it may require to reestablish the bookmark from the Home page.

4. Assist others in their family or book research or work with the CG Historian office.

5. Not all material is posted as there are others who believe if it is on the web then it is free. I was one of those at one time. I am converted, the research hours (5 to 8 hours per day, 7 days a week) made a true believer in respecting work of others.

6. This site is self-supported. It is a hobby that, as my spouse states, is my full-time retirement job. It keeps me out of trouble!

7. Please donate your Loran photos, stories or anything else that you would like to contribute to this project. And of course, if there should be an error, send an email with the details.

Bill

Ray is going a great job of hosting this and we support him temendously however the loran-history site and the Facebook group are two independent identities. If you would like to post something on either site the material should be sent to that site.
